Lightship Ambrose was built in 1908 to guide ships through the newly opened deepwater Ambrose Channel, New York harbor’s main entrance from the open sea. In 1936, she was transferred to the Scotland station off Sandy Hook and retired in 1968. In 1968, she was acquired by the South Street Seaport Museum where she is moored along pier 16 to this day.
